I'm trying to get more information on my MILLER ancestors who came from KY to central IL in the 1820s or 1830s. Anyone researching this surname knows it can be like looking for a needle in a haystack sometimes, with many MILLER families in a given area who may or may not be connected.

With this in mind, I've been collecting information on MILLER families who came to central IL, mostly from KY, VA, MD and NC and I wanted to post it in hopes someone out there knows recognizes their family. My ultimate goal is to connect some of these other families to my own MILLER ancestors. At the very least, I hope someone will benefit from the data I have collected on the following nineteen families.

I'm no expert on research in central IL, but I have been seeing some patterns at least in the nineteen families detailed below. Many of them originated in VA and passed through KY, OH or MO on their way to IL. Some of these families also seem to have moved back and forth between IL, MO and IA quite freely. Doubtless there are more connections to be found among the many MILLER families in MO but that is more than I can handle at the moment!

The only family of the following nineteen that I have any further information on is the last one, Thomas MILLER b.abt 1804 in KY (labelled as mine). The charts below contain all of the information I have on the other families. Which is to say that while I'd love to discuss them with any other researchers, I doubt I can add more to what is already here.

If anyone has further information on these families, or more complete lists of children, especially for earlier generations, please post or contact me directly. Since there is a lot of data, may I suggest using your web browser's "find" feature to locate specific Christian names. I have also tried to include verbatim biographies from local history books (in quotation marks) and I hope this does not confuse anyone.

Enjoy!

1881 HISTORY OF SANGAMON COUNTY, ILLINOIS
Inter-State Publishing Company
Chicago, Illinois, 1881

Page 859
GEORGE H. MILLER was born June 16, 1818, in Logan county, Kentucky. His parents were Geo. And Mary (Owen) Miller, the former a native of Berkley county, Virginia, and the latter of Fayette county, Kentucky. They emigrated to this county in the year 1829, and settled on section nineteen, in this township, where they lived happily together some eleven years, when their happiness was severed by the death of Mr. Miller. Mrs. Miller lived until the year 1874, when she, too, was called to her final resting place. They both died in the Christian faith, and were buried in the German cemetery.

Our subject was eleven years old when his parents came to this county, and he has lived continuously in this township ever since, following the avocation of a farmer.

He was married, September 14, 1842, to Sarah A. Wolf, a native of Allegheny county, Virginia, and born May 3, 1827. Her parents were Abram and Hannah (Arritt) Wolf, who came to this county about the year 1836, and since have died, and their remains were interred in the German Cemetery. Our subject's family consists, at present, of eight children: Mary A., Geo. H., Serrelda E., Thos. O., Ella B., Lewis E., Arthur E., and Alice I.

Mr. Miller's farm consists of three hundred acres of good land. Mr. Miller has held several township offices, the duties of which he discharged to the satisfaction of all.
Mrs. Miller is a member of the Christian Church. Mr. Miller is a member of the Masonic order."

"Miletus C. Houston was born in German Prairie, Sangamon County, October 21, 1838, a son of Samuel and Lucretia (Rudder) Houston, the former born in Virginia in September, 1809, belonging to one of the first families of that State, and the latter was a native of Kentucky, born in 1813. Samuel Houston came to Illinois and Sangamon County with his father, in 1827, arriving here from an overland route, in a prairie schooner. The family settled in German Prairie, on a farm of 900 acres, which the father of Samuel Houston bought. Here Samuel Houston lived for about fifty years, then moved to Chicago, where he died at the home of a daughter, in 1892. His wife died in 1895, at the same place. In the family of this pioneer couple were nine sons and two daughters, now all deceased except Miletus C. and Mrs. Marietta Judd of Springfield.

The Houston family has been one of the most prominent in the history of the State and nation, and they have a military record of which all who bear the name may well be proud. Of this immediate connection, two brothers of Mr. Houston of whom we write, William and John, enlisted from Sangamon County in the One Hundred and fourteenth Illinois Volunteer Infantry and gave their lives in defense of the Union during the Civil War, both contracting disease from service and exposure, from which they never recovered. William Houston was one of the prominent lawyers of Springfield.

Miletus C. Houston was educated in the district schools of this county, and worked for his father on the farm until he was twenty years of age, then followed farming on his own account until 1859, when he began teaching. He taught school in German Prairie, near Mt. Pulaski, and in 1862, moved to Bloomington, Ill., where he remained for eighteen months, then went to Springfield, which has continued to be his home.
At German Prairie January 7, 1862, occurred the marriage of Mr. Houston when he was united to Eliza W. Miller, born in German Prairie, October 10, 1837. Mrs. Houston was recognized as one of the handsomest girls of Sangamon County, as may be seen from her portrait painted at the age of eighteen years. She is a daughter of George H. and Polly (Owens) Miller, also pioneers of Illinois, who came form Kentucky overland in a wagon in 1829, settling in German Prairie. Here Mr. Miller died in 1839, and the mother in 1875. In this family there were six sons and five daughters, and of these mrs. Houston, the youngest, is the only survivor. Hiram Owens Miller, a brother of Mrs. Houston, went by ox team, overland to St. Jose, Cal., two years before gold was discovered. The history of that terrible trip of six months, shows days when the little band went without food, and many other privations endured by these sturdy travelers. He came back and made several other trips, dying there in 1868. Through her mother, Polly (Owens) Miller, Mrs. Houston is connected with a noted family of Russelville, Ky. Three of Mrs. Houston's brothers were lawyers."

George H. MILLER and Sarah A. WOLF were married on 14 Sep 1842 in Sangamon Co, IL. Sarah A. WOLF was born on 3 May 1827 in Allegheny Co, VA. George H. MILLER and Sarah A. WOLF had the following children:

5 i. Mary A. MILLER was born in Sangamon Co, IL.
6 ii. George H. MILLER was born in Sangamon Co, IL.
7 iii. Serrelda E. MILLER was born in Sangamon Co, IL.
8 iv. Thomas Owens MILLER was born in Sangamon Co, IL.
9 v. Ella B. MILLER was born in Sangamon Co, IL.
10 vi. Lewis E. MILLER was born in Sangamon Co, IL.
11 vii. Arthur E. MILLER was born in Sangamon Co, IL.
12 viii. Alice I. MILLER was born in Sangamon Co, IL.

4. Eliza W. MILLER was born on 10 Oct 1837 in German Paririe, Sangamon Co, IL.

Eliza W. MILLER and Miletus C. HOUSTON were married on 7 Jan 1862. Miletus C. HOUSTON was born on 21 Oct 1838 in German Paririe, Sangamon Co, IL.

William lived in St. Louis, MO in 1827. He lived in Jacksonville, Morgan Co, IL in 1829. He appeared in the 1840 census in Morgan Co, IL:

"EDMUND P. MILLER, livery; Beardstown; was born in Greenburg, Green County, Ky., March 25, 1819; son of Major William and Martha (Winlock) Miller. Major William Miller was born in Virginia in 1790; removed to Green County, Ky., when a boy, and learned the carpenter's trade, at which he worked several years; afterward kept hotel in Greenburg, Ky., in Springfield, Ill., and in Jacksonville, Ill. In 1843 he removed to this county, and died in Beardstown in 1864. He served in both campaigns of the Black Hawk War, being captain during the first, and promoted to the rank of Major in the second campaign; he was a stanch Whig. His wife, who was a native of Virginia, died in 1856, aged sixty-eight years; they have had eight children, six of whom are living: Edmund P. came with his parents to St. Louis, Mo., in 1827, then in 1829, to Jacksonville, Ill., where he resided until 1843; and in the fall of 1844 came to Beardstown, and purchased a farm four miles from the town, and engaged in farming in this precinct until 1881; he owned some of the best farms in the county, and engaged largely in raising grain. He purchased, at the administrator's sale of the effects of the late David Drake, his present livery stables, and does a good livery and feed business; has accommodation for fifty horses. In 1857 he married Catharine, daughter of William Wright, of Schuyler County, Ill.; they have five children living."

She appeared in the census in 1860 in Beardstown, Cass Co, IL.
Catherine M. Miller age 24, b.Ill; The Joseph WRIGHT b.1838c living with her in the 1860 census is probably related. Edmund P. MILLER and Catherine M. WRIGHT had the following children:

4 i. Olive MILLER was born about 1858 in Cass Co, IL.

family #16: Descendants of William MILLER - 5 Dec 2005
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First Generation

1. William MILLER was born about 1811 in KY. Because of his place and date of birth and his location in the 1850 census, it's likely he is a son of William MILLER and Martha WINLOCK who came to Beardstown, Cass Co, IL in 1844. If so, he is probably the William MILLER listed in the 1840 census of Morgan Co, IL age 20-30 with 1 daughter age 5-10 and 1 son <5, though the 1850 census (which lists all his children as b.MO) seems to contradict this.
He appeared in the census in 1850 in Beardstown, Cass Co, IL, though the census listing is confusing. There is an Elizabeth SETTLES age 20, and a Fanny WHITMORE age 16, who may or may not be married daughters of William.

William MILLER and Louisa (--------) were married before 1836. Louisa (--------) was born about 1810 in VA. William MILLER and Louisa (--------) had the following children:

2 i. Susan MILLER was born about 1836 in MO.
3 ii. James MILLER was born about 1838 in MO.
4 iii. Tabitha MILLER was born about 1840 in MO.
5 iv. John MILLER was born about 1841 in MO.
6 v. David MILLER was born about 1844 in MO.

Several land transactions have been found in the IL State database under the name Thomas MILLER which may or may not pertain to him:

4 Sep 1835 in Sangamon Co, IL (Thomas listed as res. Sangamon Co, IL)

(The George MILLER listed on the same page was b.1804 in KY. There is also an "H. Miller Sr." listed on the same page b.1780-1790, with a wife but no children. An Elizabeth MILLER b.1786 VA, possibly his widow, seems to be listed in the 1850 census of Menard Co. in roughly the same area where "H. Miller" was listed in 1840.)

He appeared in the census in 1850 in Cass Co, IL.
Thomas Miller age 45, farmer, b.KY.

He appeared in the census in 1860 in Mason City, Mason Co, IL.
Thomas Miller age 56, farmer, b.KY.

He died after 1860.

There seems to be a probable connection to the George Miller (b.1804 KY) who is living in Menard Co. in 1850 and in Mason City in 1870. One of George MILLER's children was living in Salt Creek, Mason Co, IL where most of Thomas MILLER's children settled.

Thomas MILLER and (--------) (--------) were married before 1825. (--------) (--------) died before 1839 in IL. Thomas MILLER and (--------) (--------) had the following children:

+2 i. Sarah MILLER (born about 1826).
+3 ii. Elizabeth MILLER (born between 1825 and 1830).

Thomas MILLER and Sarah WRIGHT were married on 4 Apr 1839 in Sangamon Co, IL. Sarah WRIGHT was born about 1815 in KY. The census entries for her children contradict each other as to the place of her birth but the 1850 and 1860 census both state she was born in Kentucky. Still, it is possible she was born in Missouri, Illinois or Ohio as claimed by her children in later census entries.
She appeared in the census in 1850 in Cass Co, IL.
Sarah Miller age 34, b.KY.
She appeared in the census in 1860 in Mason City, Mason Co, IL.
Sarah Miller age 44, b.KY.

She died after 1860.
Thomas MILLER and Sarah WRIGHT had the following children:

+4 i. George MILLER (born about 1840).
+5 ii. William Henry MILLER (born in Aug 1841).
+6 iii. Richard MILLER (born in May 1844).
+7 iv. Susan Mary MILLER (born in Jul 1847).
8 v. Delilah MILLER was born about 1849 in IL. She appeared in the census in 1850 in Cass Co, IL.
Delilah Miller age 1, b.IL. She probably died young as she is not listed in the 1860 census, nor is she listed among Lydia (Miller) DAVIDSON's siblings in her 1929 obituary.
+9 vi. Lydia L. MILLER (born on 30 Sep 1855).
10 vii. Josephine MILLER was born about 1858 in IA. She appeared in the census in 1860 in Mason City, Mason Co, IL.
Josephine Miller age 2, b.Iowa. The records of Mason Co, IL show two marriages for the name Josephine Miller:
25 Dec 1883 to Joseph Fletcher
20 Sep 1893 to George Curry
However, it seems most likely Josephine died very young as she is not listed in the census after 1860 in Mason Co, IL or elsewhere, and is not mentioned in the list of Lydia (Miller) DAVIDSON's siblings in her 1929 obituary.

Second Generation

2. Sarah MILLER was born about 1826 in IL.

Sarah MILLER and John BLANCHARD were married before 1853. John BLANCHARD was born about 1827 in NY. He appeared in the census in 1860 in Athens, Menard Co, IL.
