I'm interested in finding out how I might track down any old vinegar factories or tanneries that were operating in Waukegan, Lake Co., IL around 1860 and afterward.

My GGGgrandfather, Theobald Herberger, reportedly owned and operated a vinegar factory just prior to the Civil War after which point it was burned down upon suspicion that he was involved in the Underground Railroad. He started up a new business after that, this time a tannery, but it too was burned for the same reasons of suspicion. After that the poor guy just moved to California rather than start all over again for a third time.

Does anybody have any ideas on how I can find out where either of these factories were located or who operated them, worked in them, etc.?

Thanks; I'm open to any ideas.
