The History of Hancock County, Sesquicentennial Edition (p207), shows a John Williams as one of the early settlers of Carthage Township. Also, on p323 there is a reference to a Major John Williams as making the first move (an offering of land for the church and cemetery) toward building a new church in the area of the inactive Majorville Church. A new church, the Hancock Church (in Hancock Township), was later named the Majorville Church in honor of Major John Williams. Also, on p562 therre is reference to a surveyor by the name of John Williams who laid out a village for the Mormons by the name of "Morley Town" in Walker Twp. in about 1844. There are also several other J. Williams (J.C. for example)who could be John Williams listed in the index for the book. Good luck!
