Payne is her married name, maiden not known. Her first husband (name not known) died while carrying fire wood across either the Mississippi or the Des Moines river. The ice broke and he fell thru, drowning, this was before 1830-31.
Elizabeth then married William Clark/e, in about 1831, in St. Francisville, Missouri. They were married in the home of Jerimiah Wayland by a fake preacher, coming from Keokuk, Iowa.
There is a story that says Elizabeth came from across the river from Illinois to marry William Clark/e. This is where I got the idea she might have come from Hancock Co. since there only transportation was a dug out tree, for a boat. They used that boat to go get her for the wedding.
William & Elizabeth's home was north of St. Francisville, towards Sweethome TWP. or Athens, Missouri.
If anyone can help me please let me know. This is a very tall brick wall for me.
