Pauline, I am not a military expert but... I had a situation some time ago that looked similar to yours. In my case, "Mo." was an abbreviation of "Mounted". If this is true in your case, "Co. H. 3rd Mo. Cal." may mean: "Company H, 3rd Mounted Illinois Cavalry". I know it seems strange to state that a cavalry unit was mounted but there is such a thing as unmounted cavalry and mounted infantry.
