I am searching for the ancestors/relatives of my ggg grandfather, Alexander W Webb. A W (as he was known) was born 1 May 1811 in Ohio; he died 8 Apr 1891 in Dallas County, Texas. He joined the Illinois Militia in Greene County, Illinois in 1832. An Alexander Webb bought federal land in Calhoun County Illinois on 1 May 1836 (A W's 25th birthday). A W came to Texas from Greene County in December 1840 with other Illinois families such as the Beeman's, Silkwood's and Rattan's. He was prominent in early Texas history.
In addition to the information above there are other clues that include:
The only Webb listed in the 1850 census for Calhoun County is Henry H Webb, who married Sarah Peacock in 1836. Among their children is Jehu Webb.
In the 1880 census for Dallas County, there is listed a Jehew Webb, born in Illinois, living on land once owned by A W. He states that his father was born in Ohio and his mother was born in Tennessee.
Jehu Webb is buried in the Long Creek Cemetery in East Dallas County. Long Creek is a small cemetery where the families of pioneers are buried. A W and family are buried there. Jehu’s tombstone states that he served in the Missouri 7th Infantry during the Civil War.
A W’s oldest daughter, Nancy, married George Nelson Webb (b. Abt 1852) after her first husband, James A Coats, died. My grandmother told me that George was Nancy’s cousin from Illinois.
That is about all I know about A W’s Illinois connection, but you never know what small clue will help to make a connection. I would appreciate any help you might be able to give.
