I believe there is a Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Museum in Omaha. There might also be a home page for them. I know they USED to put out a quarterly publication. If it wasn't a C&NW train I suspect that they still could find information about it...and would know what kind of information was kept on accidents of that type.
There should be an intensive report in local newspapers. There is a pay newspaper site that has a searchable name index. A cousin of mine recently signed on and found 130+ hits for a relative that got into a horse racing scrape in the 1890's in Germany.
The Clay county fair in Spencer has a building that houses a large model train exhibit. If you can find someone who belongs to a model train group you will be surprised how interested they are in full-size trains. Maybe they would be a source of help. The reason I say this is because I belong to a model airplane club and we are talking about digging into a WWII crash site of a B-17 bomber.
