The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, August 27, 1908

FERMAN E. GRAY was born in Warren County, Iowa, March 10, 1870, and died at his home north of Lucas, August 14, 1908, aged 39 years, 5 months and 4 days. He was married to MISS EFFIE M. SNUGGS March 27, 1904, and one son was born to them.

MR. GRAY has resided near Lucas most of his life and his friends and
neighbors will always remember him for his kind deeds. About one year ago
his health failed and, accompanied by his wife and son, he went to Rocky
Ford, Colo., thinking the climate would be beneficial to him. But he
gradually grew weaker and was brought back home last spring, since when his
wife has labored faithfully and devotedly in his prolonged and trying
illness. A short time before his death he bid each member of the family
good-by and asked them not to grieve for he was going home. He leaves,
besides his wife and son, a father, three brothers and one sister.

Rev. W.R. Pond preached the funeral sermon at the residence on last Sunday
morning, after which the Yeomen took charge. After the services, the coffin
was lowered to its final resting place in the strong silent hill, where the
turtle-doves will chant his requiem, while "the green leaves quiver with the
cooling wind, and make a checquer'd shadow."
