The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, December 6, 1906

On Monday afternoon, about 4:00 o'clock, the town was startled by the report
that ROY BERRY, son of MR. and MRS. J.Y. BERRY, had attempted self
destruction by drinking carbolic acid. Soon the report was confirmed and
his death announced. He is a young man about 28 years of age. He was
formerly in the government service in the Philippine Islands, but later
returned to Chariton and made this his home. It is said he was addicted to
the use of intoxicants and had been drinking heavily for several days just
prior to the tragedy. On the fatal day he went over to the closet in the
school yard, and after returning said to a sister whose home is at Lacona,
that he intended to go on a long journey. She asked him if he would not
visit her before he went away to which he replied no; that he was going
immediately and admonished her to care for a little nephew, whose mother had
just died. Soon the family noticed his hands close and the tension of his
muscles and the color come to his lips. He laid down on the bed and soon
expired, after bidding his family good bye. No cause was revealed for his
action and he must have taken the fatal draught in the closet, going there
for that purpose.

The third son of J.Y. BERRY, of this city, died at the home of his parents,
Monday, Dec. 3, 1906, at the age of 28 years, 6 months and 16 days. He was
born at Plinary, McCooper[sic] County, Ill., and came with his parents to this
city at the age of four years, where he resided until 1902 when he enlisted
with the fifth regiment and went to service in the Philippine Islands.
After five months he was transferred into the cavalry where he remained
until he received a disability discharge, returning home in 1904.

The funeral services were held at the home, Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o
clock, conducted by Rev. N. Evans. He leaves to mourn his loss, mother,
father, three sisters and two brothers -- E.Y. BERRY, of Centerville, O.L.
