Mary Ferebee Howard, of Tarboro died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005.
She was born, June 22, 1913.

Miss Mary Ferebee Howard, a prominent and lifelong Tarboro citizen died at her home after a brief illness. Miss Howard was the only daughter of the late William Stamps and Mary Ferebee Howard.

Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at Calvary Episcopal Church in Tarboro with the Rev. William Smythe officiating. Interment will follow in the Calvary churchyard.

Miss Howard attended St. Mary's College in Raleigh, N.C., and in 2003, she received their "Most Distinguished Alumna" award.

In January 1942, she joined the American Red Cross, serving first on New Caledonia, then at Guadalcanal. She recounted the experiences of these years in her memoir, "No Drums, No Trumpets."

Returning to Eastern North Carolina after World War II, Miss Howard received her bachelor of science and master of art degrees from East Carolina University. She taught school for many years in Tarboro and Rocky Mount.

She was very active in community affairs and maintained a keen intellect and spirited zest for life until the end.
Miss Howard was predeceased by her brothers Williams Stamps Howard Jr., Nelson Ferebee Howard and Romaine Howard; and a niece, Ruth Howard Creech.

She is survived by her nieces, Katirie Howard Leach and Eleanor Howard Vance, and nephews Romaine Howard Jr. and William Stamps Howard III.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.

Funeral arrangements are made by Carlisle Funeral Home, Tarboro.
