Houghton received his education in the district schools of his native place, but was forced to leave school at the age of fifteen years in order to help his family, who were left without support about that time. His father had enlisted in the Union army, in the Civil War, and there gave his life for his country, and his son took up the burden of caring for the family. In 1863, Mr. Houghton came to Ripley and began his life as a farmer, and has now one of the most prosperous and flourishing farms in this region.
