I have wondered about Zachariah. He was the son of William, apparently, the one who appeared in Mecklenburg County NC 1770-1772. Interestingly, they are living near a Abraham and James Cook. I haven't found anything to connect them to James Hester's in-laws or Granville, but it seems unlikely that he would land next to an unrelated Abraham Cook by chance. The only thing I could find about them is that they married Walkers and their in-laws moved to Orangeburg District, SC, where we find an Abraham in 1790. Although there is a James there, also, it appears that the other one stayed in Mecklenburg. I am speculating that that this William may be another son of James. He would probably be in the age range of his other children. In 1769, a second William appears on the tax lists between James and Zachariah, but wasn't there in 1771. The districts aren't named. However, it appears that the combined list was copied from district lists, so there may be geographic information in it. I have another William, who appears to be Zachariah's son. He appears, landless, on the 1782 Island Creek District tax list. Zachariah was the only Hester of the right age there in 1782. James had moved to Tar River District. Hopefully, I can find more when I get the other tax lists. |
