On 7 March 7, 1817, Samuel Hassley of Dickson County, Tennessee sold 110 acres of land on both sides of Hassley's Creek on Yellow Creek to John T. Hutchison, son of James and Sarah (Thomas) Hutchison, formerly of Shenandoah County, Virginia. Witness to the deed was Eleanor Parrish and William D. (Dillard) Turner, husband of Priscilla Ursula (Thomas) Perry Turner. She was John's aunt, and a sister to his mother.

Recently I have come across research which shows Mary (Thomas) Crume, the widow of William Crume who died enroute to Kentucky in 1795, married Samuel Hassley and settled in Dickson County. The spelling on the name on the earliest deed was botched pretty bad but so was the name in most deed extracts in Dickson County. There is a 1810 deed in Nelson County, Kentucky which specifically names the "Horsleys" and the two daughters of William Crume as living in Dickson County, TN. Ten years later there is yet another deed in Nelson County, Kentucky which speaks of Samuel and Mary "Hasley" of Clarke County, Arkansas Territory selling land to Cyrus Talbot.

I cannot believe there were two men with such similar spelling living in Clarke County that early - they must be one and the same person. The second deed says Samuel and Mary were living in Clarke Co., Ark. by 17 Mar. 1820, three years after the sale of the land in Dickson County.

I am prone to believe Samuel Hassley sold his land to his nephew by marriage before he left Dickson County, and witnesses to the act was his brother-in-law William Dillard Turner. I have seen several references to Mary's surname being other than Thomas or Crume. Am I way off base somewhere?

I saw one mention of a daughter Miriam - this was also the name of Mary (Thomas) Crum Hassley's sister who married James Mathes. Too many coincidences? Would someone share a family group sheet with me on Samuel and Mary Hassley?
