It is a most oddly tangled web, to say the least. There may not have been a brother to Lucy, could have been a cousin, but I know there were several Hanks boys that married Shipley girls in the same area. Like you, it's been a long time since I sorted thru it all. I do know that all those NC Hanks families are not correct in their assumptions, and I belong to that line.(Joshua Hanks Sr) I even found on-line a newspaper article where a Judge in NC ruled the NC fables to be fact back in 1941. The article said that Robert Lincoln's instructions for all Abe's private papers were that they were to be opened to the public in 1947, but I haven't found anything about them yet. Seems that there were a lot of "loose ladies" in the Hanks clan, since there are at least 10 families claiming title. None of the NC Nancy's had a mother named Lucy, and Abe himself knew his grandmother and the stories, as well as Dennis Hanks, another "bae-born child". Ought to be enough dirt to keep us busy for a long time!
