I want to add the following to what you have on the Hanks/Harper connection. From my research of the original records, I believe there were two Abraham Hanks. Hope this helps. I would appreciate correspondence with anyone researching either of these Abrahams.
ABRAHAM HANKS, son of Luke and Elizabeth Hanks, was born after 1742 for on 6 June 1763 it was ordered the churchwardens to bind out Abraham Hanks to Turner Hanks discharging him from his former master William Glasscock Jr. (Richmond Co., VA. OB 15). It is assumed that he is a brother of Turner and Luke because of the association between them in the records. Apparently he and brother Luke migrated to Pr. William Co., Va. for on 7 Nov 1775 (Pr. William Co., Va. DBT, p. 183) Abraham Hanks witnessed a deed from Andrew Brown to William Calk. On 7 Sept 1778 (DBT, p. 462) Abraham Hanks witnessed a deed from John and Lydia Shanks of Fauquier Co. to Thomas Homes for land in Pr. William Co. Abraham Hanks is in Halifax Co. NC in 1786 with one male 21-60, 2 males under 21, and 2 females and Luke Hanks is in Halifax Co., NC in 1790 with 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16 and 2 females.
Abraham Hanks, son of Luke, as described by Baber died c. 1790 in Campbell Co., Va. and was married to Sarah Harper. Baberís source for this is tradition and family record. From the records of Campbell Co. there seems to have been only the one Abraham Hanks...he who married Lucy Jennings and died in Lincoln Co., Tenn. most probably the son of James Hanks.
My file on the following is too large for this forum, but the information provided should show the diffences in the two lines.
It appears that James and Sarah Hanks Draper, Richard and Mary Hanks, William and Susanna Hanks Hightower, Thomas Hanks, and James Hanks, five of the eight children of William and Hester Mills Hanks, all migrated to Amelia Co., Va. around 1758-1760. James Draper, William Hightower, and Thomas Hanks all died in Amelia Co. Richard and Mary Hanks left the area after 1770 and James Hanks moved to what became Campbell Co., Va. From existing records, he and his family appear to be the only Hanks family there. His children were Abraham, Thomas, James, Tabitha, and Sarah. James Sr., James Jr., Abraham, and Thomas were still in Campbell Co. in 1800. This Abraham is the only Abraham in Campbell Co. and was married to Lucy Jennings.
Abraham Hanks, son of James Hanks of Amelia Co., (from Rev. War Pension Records ) was born 2 April 1759 in Amelia Co., Va., was residing in Bedford Co. Va. when he volunteered Aug 1777 and again on 2 Apr 1779. He was discharged 1 May 1781. After the revolution he resided in Campbell Co., VA. then moved to Lincoln Co., Tenn. for 18 month and allowed pension there 16 Oct 1832. He died in Lincoln Co., Tenn. on 10 July 1833. He was married 15 April 1788 in Campbell Co. to Lucy Jennings. In 1840 she was in Lincoln Co., Tenn. age 70 years.
I have found no records in Campbell Co., Va. of a connection between Hanks and Harper. If anyone has an original source for the Harper connection, please let me know.
