Hi Ayiana,

I just posted a response about the Lazarres of Cap-Haitien in another forum.

The name is fairly uncommon in France, but nothing about it suggests those so named might be jewish. It's a case of a first name becoming a surname, one of the very common ways family names came into existence among the French.
My ancestress Marie or Madeleine Lazarre, by her first-names was clearly not jewish...although it would be very interesting to me if she were!

Rob

PS Old-Testament names like Abraham, Isaac etc., often associate with french protestant (huguenot) families. The Lazarres may have been protestant at one time....ut not becessarily. I wish I had more for you!
