Dear Ms. Caroline:
I hope this information is useful. A serious researcher from Santo Domingo wrote to me that he VICTORA family were Jews from Bodeaux. I was researching the VICTORIA family lbecause they infermarried into the OBEN family quite often during the 18th and 19th Centuries.
Some Jews left Santo Domingo due to persecution of Masons. As the Masons are an organization in which Jews and non-Jews may socialize, some persons felt tha the persecution wuld affect the Jews. This is what I have learned from a posting by a descendant of those who left Santo Domingo.
Slave rebellions also effected migrations from Haiti and from Santo Domingo.
The OBENs which I have found in my research were free. From my research, some have lived in the islands for generaions and some came with successive waves of immigraion, particularly in the early 19th century when anti-semitism worsened in Europe. For that reason there are OBENs of mixed and of Caucasian ethnicity.
I hope we can compare notes.
