Jennifer, Nice to see a researcher on this noted family. By the way, Lt. James Murray Hadden's "Journal and Orderly Books" can be read on Google Books. Fascinating historical record! I agree with John Haldane that this HADDEN family could very likely be Irish -- Ulster setters originally from Scotland in earlier generations. If there are any males from this line living today, DNA tests would prove or disprove this Irish/Scots ancestry. Joining the Royal Artillery and Marines was a popular occupation for young men in large families in Northern Ireland in the late 1700s and early 1800s, where they themselves had no hope of inheriting the family farm or business. We've found a number of specific instances and are researching more. Would be glad to share other genealogy notes with you. Regards, Annie C. |
