If you go back to the German descent of the name you connect with the trade of the person you are researching. The name Groce/gross/gros/ could mean "Grocer".This could be someone who worked as a tradesman in foodstuffs. This is why I have had so much trouble in researching my family. I have run across all sorts of spelling of the name Groce. When people would come into this country the people who entered the would somehow make their names correspond with their trade....ie grocer...gros/groce/gross. This is why you must search all possibilitys of the spelling of the name Groce. I have traced what I believe to be my family back ti l820 but cannot go any further back. I have found that names of children have a lot to do with research. Families carry names forward.
