You have a good question, and one I probably can not answer. First off, the John Grant that I am directly related to is said to have come from Pennsylvania, Berks County. However, I do not have much on his father, William Grant II or his grandfather, William Grant. I have read various accounts, one that William Grant II had no siblings. Where they got their info, I know not. Also, some say that he came over from Scottland and others say it was his father. I am providing you with my notes that I have on William Grant. I do not know if it will be of any assistance, but it can not hurt. Lastly, I serioiusly believe there were more than William Grant's family in that areal. Although some people made it to America on their own, others came to the US in family groups. That is always a posibility here. One question here, do yoi have any male members that are descendants of this same John Grant? Here is the info that I have on file. There may be more elsewhere. I have a book on the Boone family and other written info, but it, too, does not go into detail. Ray Jackson This Will is that of William Grant II. In one of the clauses he mentions a slave being left to that of his daughter Rebecca who married James Lemon. This is the Keipper line. Following is a copy of William Grant's will, found in Fayette County (Kentucky) Will Book "C," Page 349. "In the name of God Amen, I William Grant of the County of Fayette and the Commonwealth of Kentucky being infirm and full of years but of sound mind and disposing memory, for which I thank God, and calling to mind the uncertanity of human life and being desirous to dispose of all such worldly estate as it has pleased God to bless me with, I give the same in the manner following, that Is to say, 1st. I desire that all my just debts should be paid together with my funeral expenses. 2nd. I desire that my Dear and beloved wife Elizabeth Grant have one third part of my estate both real and personal, after my debts is paid out of it & too legisees which are to be hereafter mentioned taken therefrom, and for that third part to include two negro girls Jenny and Fanny, which two girls my desire is that they shall be my wifes forever to do what she pleases. 3d. My desire is that a Certain negro lad now hired to James Lemon named Frank to be kept in the hands of my wife Elizabeth and trustees hereafter mentioned for the use of my daughter Rebecca Lemons, the said negro Frank to be left in the hands of my wife & the trustees that he shall not be taken to pay James Lemon's debts and is not to be considered the property of James Lemons at all. 4th. I give to my Grandson, William Grant son of John, a negro boy named Jesse, but he is not to have possession of the boy till after my wife's death unless my wife see cause to give the boy up sooner if she does not my desire is that my wife have the said boy as long as she lives. 5th. I give all the rest of my estate, both real and personal to be divided amongst my children and Grand children hereafter mentioned, that is to say, my sons John, William & Squire, my daughters, Mary Mitchell, Sarah Sanders, Elizabeth Mosby, and Rebeca Lemmon, likewise one moiety with my above mentioned children to be equally divided amongst my Grand children, the sons and daughters of my deceased son Isarael Grant, likewise one equal moiety as above mentioned to be divided between my two grandchildren Elijah & Betsy Grant; son and daughter to my dec'd son Samuel Grant; my desire is that all my estate mentioned in the 5th article be sold by my Executors to the highest bidders and the monies ariseing therefrom to be equally divided amongst my children above mentioned, the children of Isarael Grant dec'd and the children of Samuel Grant dec'd, to have–each of the familys of grandchildren above mentioned–one equal moiety divided amongst them. 6th. But as my son William is security for my son John to the Executors of William Fry dec'd, for a considerable amount, now my desire is if my son John pay off the above mentioned debt himself and my son William suffers none by it, then my desire is that my son John have his equal moiety as above descsibed, but if in case he should not and my son William should suffer thereby, then and in that case my will and desire is that my son William have the part intended for my son John or so much thereof as will make him whole. 7th. I appoint my son William Grant and John C. Richardson Trustees in this my will. 8th. I appoint my wife Elizabeth Executrix and my son William & John Richardson Ex'ors to this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all others and former wills or testaments by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 18th day of August in the year of–Lord Eighteen Hundred and Three. WILLIAM GRANT (Seal) Witnesses: FRANCIS BROWNING WILLIAM CALDWELL OMBERNORD YUNLING A codicil to this my last will and testament and it is my desire that it may be made a part thereof Whereas I give to my son Isareal Grant dec'd in his life time one thousand acres of land in Clark County on the waters of Stoner and never made any deed for the same and whereas my said son Isareal by his last will and testament did dispose of the same (reference being thereto had will more fully appear) I do hereby ratify and confirm the same. Witness my hand and seal this day of 1804. WILLI'M GRANT. (SEAL) found at: http://www.keipper.com/lineage/boone/wgwill.html [Jackson.FTW] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.martygrant.com/gen/grant/newsletter/2002-11-1-6.htm William Grant (1726-1804) and Elizabeth Boone (1732-1814) of Pennsylvania, Rowan Co, NC (now Yadkin County) and Kentucky. I don't have much data on this family in Kentucky, so I'll concentrate on what I do know about them. William Grant's family is well documented in the Boone family records, since he was married to Daniel Boone's sister. I will not go into too much detail in this article, but present the facts, as known. According to the tradition in this family, William Grant (Sr) and wife Margery Verner left the Scottish Highlands for America, settling in Pennsylvania before 1726. That is the year that William Grant (Jr) was born in Pennsylvania. The family may have moved to Maryland for awhile, then later moved to the Yadkin River in North Carolina by ca 1751. It was there that William Grant (Jr) married Elizabeth Boone ca 1751 or 1752. They lived in what became Rowan County in 1753. This area became Surry County in 1770, and Yadkin in 1850. I don't know much about William Sr and wife, except that he was dead by 1771, and she was still living then, as reported by a Moravian missionary who visited the area that year. He did not list them by name, but referred to William Grant's aged widowed mother living with him at that time. William Grant (Jr) remained in the Yadkin area for many years until ca 1777 when the Grants, Boones and others moved to Boones Station (Boonesboro), Kentucky. In 1778 they came back home to North Carolina until ca 1780 they went back to Kentucky again. He died in Kentucky (in Fayette County) in 1804, Elizabeth dying in 1814. Although all of their children were born at the Yadkin River in North Carolina, none of them remained in North Carolina, all going to Kentucky with their parents. Since the children all left NC (except Hannah, who died on the way), I'll not follow up on their families, other than to list their names here: Mary Grant (22 Sep 1753 Rowan Co, NC) married Moses Mitchell. John Grant, Colonel (30 Jun 1754 Rowan Co, NC) Israel Grant (14 Dec 1756 Rowan Co, NC) Sarah Grant (25 Jan 1757 Rowan Co, NC) married John Saunders. William Grant (10 Jan 1761 Rowan Co, NC) Samuel Grant, Captain (20 Nov 1762 Rowan Co, NC) Squire Grant, General (1 Sep 1764 Rowan Co, NC). Elizabeth Grant (28 Aug 1765 Rowan Co, NC) married John Mosby. Moses Grant (3 Oct 1768 Rowan Co, NC - 13 Aug 1789) Hannah Grant (30 Mar 1771 Surry Co, NC, died 30 Mar 1777 Surry Co, NC). Rebecca Boone Grant (4 Jun 1774 Surry Co, NC) married James Lamond. I have not attempted to document this family in Pennsylvania (Philadelphia County) or in Maryland (county unknown). They left quite a few records in Rowan Co, NC, mainly court records and deeds. Following defeat of Scottish army at Battle of Culloden 16 April 1746 he emigrated to America. Lived in North Carolina and Virginia. Moved to Virginia with family during the Indian outbreak of 1759; but soon returned to North Carolina. Moved to Kentucky, 1779 with Daniel Boone; with 4 Bryan brothers (William, Morgan, James, and Joseph) helped build the fort at Bryan Station, 5 miles northeast of Lexington. He and family settled at Boonesborough, but when Daniel Boone was captured by indians at Blue Lick in 1778 he supposed him dead, and moved back to North Carolina. He came back to Kentucky in 1780. His will shows he had several slaves which he bequeathed to his wife, Elizabeth. Special note: Found a George Grant who was married in Bourbon County, KY, on 21 Sep. 1797, to a Mary Berry. George's origins are unknown. "Admitting, however, that the Boone connection did sojourn awhile in the Linnville settlement, they must have resumed their journey for their original destination not later than the fall of 1751 or spring of 1752, for we find that Squire Boone's daughter Elizabeth, early in the latter year, was united in marriage in the Yadkin Valley to William Grant, a native of Maryland who had been some yhears residing in that region. (Note 7: MS. statement of Mrs. Lemond, only surviving child of William and Elizabeth Grant.)" Source: "The Life Of Daniel Boone," Draper, Lyman C., LL.D., Stackpole Books, page125 & 136. Note: Mrs. Lemond (or Lamond) was Rebecca Boone Grant who married a James Lamond. |
