I have at last got round to having a proper look at the information you sent!
I am wondering if I have gone wrong somewhere as I cannot find any reference to my Thomas having the name Bellingham. I know he was born about 1867 in Codicote and he died on 6th June 1941 and the burial records only say Thomas Arthur Gower. I suppose if Emma had him out of wedlock and Bellingham was the father's name, he may have dropped it when she married. However if John is my ggg grandfather I'm glad I have found out the names of his children
I do have some further information which may be of interest to Emma's grand-daughter. According to the 1881 Census George and Emily had 5 children, Leonard 12, Ada 9, Arthur 6, Albert 4 and Laura 1.
In the information Brian sent me William Gower and Sarah Johnson had 9 children, Sarah b. 1776, Amos b. 1781, Joseph b. 1785, Phoebe b. 1787, Richard b.1789, William b. 1792, John b. 1794, George b. 1979, Thomas b. 1803.
I also have William's grandparents who were Robert Gower died 1731/2 and Sarah Axtell died 1730/31 and their children Thomas b. 1696 (William's father), George b. 1703, Joseph b. 1704, Robert b. 1704 (twins?), Susannah b. 1707, Daniel b. 1709 and Sarah b. 1709 (another set?).
Thomas married Sarah Harding in 1727 in Abbots Langley. Their children were:-
Thomas 1729-1775 (a lunatic buried!), the next child was stillborn, Susannah 1734, William, Sarah 1739-1814, Joseph 1742, James 1744-1813, Eunice 1745, Matthew 1748.
That is all I have - I'm afraid I don't have any knowledge of the current Gower family.
You may be able to help me with something else - my grandparents Stanley Frederick Thomas Gower (marriage certificate reads Stanley Thomas Gower) and Florence Annie Maddox married on 29th March 1917 at Hitchin Register Office. They lived at Rustling End Farm, Knebworth with my great grandparents Thomas and Amy. Their first child died soon after birth. Their second child Reginald Stanley was born in 1919 so the first child must have died between 1917 and 1919. Would you be able to tell me at which church this child is likely to be buried? I can then contact the church to find out if this child was male or female.
Well - that's it for now. Thanks very much for the information.
PS Are there any books showing pictures of old Codicote?
