Researchers have been hard pressed to learn the circumstances of John Goodwine's birth. Some have proposed that he was one John Goodwin, a Quaker, born 1735. Quaker records reputiate this proposal along with the proposal that a son of John the Quaker was the father of John Goodwine.

John, the Quaker married Naomi Potter in 1759. Their eldest child was born ten years after the birth of John Goodwine. John the Quaker and Naomi's children were Jesse born 1760 and Ann born 1762. John the Quaker married next Tacy Jones in 1777. Tacy filed administration of his estate in August 1783 which was 49 years before the 1831 death of John Goodwine It has also been suggested that a Thomas Goodwin of Washington County, Pennsylvania is the father of John Goodwine of Spencer County Kentucky. The estate records of this Thomas do not include a son John. Nor is Thomas Jr. old enough to be John Goodwine's father.

Sources are few and far between that reveal something of the early life of John Goodwine. The 1830 Spencer County Kentucky Census indicates his age as between ages of 70-79. Thus John Goodwin was born between 1751 and 1760 or 1750-1759 if his birthday had not occurred prior to the enumeration. A birth of 1750 seems to be in keeping with having had his first child born in 1770.

His will dated August 1828 only provides a partial listing of his 12 children.
…heirs, except Martha, the $100 that James Heady has got in his hands is to be counted in her part.
.James Colins as he was always owned by my son Heady get equal portion with the rest of my heirs.
.My sons, Thos Goodwin, John Goodwin, and Elias Goodwin be my executors

At the December 5 and 6, 1831 the appraisement of said properties was recorded.
Eleven of his twelve children are named in a deed executed by “John Goodwine heirs" to Jacob Heady. (SPENCER CO. KY - Deed Book B pg 469 - 21 February 1834)
.Thomas Goodwin, John Goodwine, and Lydia Burch of Spencer County, Kentucky;
.Seth Goodwin, William Goodwin, Martha Goodwin, John Griffith and wife Elizabeth of Monroe County, Indiana;
.Thomas Heady and wife Rebecca and Abner Goodwine of Putnam County, Indiana;
.James Goodwine and heirs of Warren County, Indiana;
.Elias Goodwin of Lincoln County, Missouri.
The wording in John's will indicates his son, Heady, has died prior to him writing it on August 23, 1828 so he is not included in any of the deeds.
