For Rebecca: The Republican Leader, Aug 3, 1888, springville, Springs--Mrs Rebecca York who died in Mitchell last friday was buried here in the Gilstrap graveyard, Saturday. VolV (T-Z), p 2457. BUR: Gilstrap cemetery, located on Richard's former farm near Salem, Howard Twp, IN. Others buried in this cemetery include his 2nd wife, Nancy (Wright); his son, John and John's 1st wife, Abigail (Colglazier) Gilstrap; his daughter, Matilda (Gilstrap) Slagle; and his granddaughter, Rebecca (Gilstrap) York and her husband, David York. Each couple shares a monument, but Matilda's husband's name is not on the stone with hers. Directions to the cemetery, located in NW 1/4 of Sec 8/Twp 1N/R3E (9.3 miles from the Courthouse). From the Courthouse drive north on N. Main St. 0.2 miles to intersection of SR 56, turn left, go 7.3 miles to intersection of W Washington School Rd, turn left, go 1.4 miles to intersection of Vincennes Trail, turn left, go 0.3 miles to a farm lane on the left, turn left, go 0.1 miles to Gilstrap cemetery. It is on the left (north) side of Vincennes Trail at the top of a small hill in the middle of an agricultural field [p 13 of Howard Twp Cemeteries]. For William: Name spelled with two "LL" in marriage records of Washington Co, IN. For Richard: 1790 census Newbern District, Beauford Co NC Head of household: Gilstrap, Richard FWM over 16 including heads of family- 1 FWM under 161 FWF including heads of family-1 Married Feb 6th 1788 to Mary Truett. 2nd, 24 Mar 1797, wife Nancy Wright died in 1860. Data from daughters of the American revolution, Christopher Harris Chapter, Salen Indiana. Vol 3. Nancy Wright is the daughter of Benjamin and Barbara (Morgan ) Wright. Richard and family lived in Wayne Co. KY from 1805/06 until 1089/09 when they came to the northwest territory which later became the state of Indiana. Washington Co. IN. Buried in private cemetary on farm Some record reflect birth date of June 6th 1768 and death on Dec 8, 1836 Birth and Death date taken from gravestone , 6 May 1768--16 Dec 1835. Richard and Nancy came to IN while it was still part of the Northwest Territory. MARY TRUITT: Her date of death had to be prior to Richard's second marriage in May 1797. "State of North Carolina, Craven county. Pages 223-224: THE CHRISTIAN RECORD, Vol. IV, No 7, July 1860, Elijah Goodwin, Editor & Pub., Obituaries: Brother Goodwin; It becomes my duty to record the death of one of our most ancient sisters, Sister Nancy, widow of Richard Gilstrap. She was the daughter of Benjamin Wright, born in Roan County N.C. on the 4th day fo May 1779, was married in the same county on the 24th day of May 1797, was imersed by Elder William Summers in Wayne Co., Ky. in the year 1806 and became a member of the Separate or Free Will Baptist, (this church never had any confession of Faith or Discipline, besides the Bible). She was one of the first members to embrace the Reformation and continued a faithful member of the Church of Christ at Middlecreek, Washington Co., Ind., until the day of her death. She died on the 10th day of April, 1860, being 80 years, 11 months and 6 days old. She always attended the Lord's house whenever opportunity permitted. She was very devotional and zealous in religion. But she is no more. "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord from hernceforth; yea , saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labor, and their works do follow them." She is gone to the grave, but 'twere wrong to deplore her, When Christ was her ransom, her guard, and her guide; He brought her, He took her and soon will restore her Where death has no power since the Savior has died. Common Pleas Minute Bk C:584-587: John Gilstrap (son) requests John Davis be made plaintiff with himself to administrator her estate. He also petitions court to partition NW 1/4, Sec 8/Twp 1-N/R 3-E. Ibid, p 604: Court rules lands not susceptible to partition and orders it be sold, less a piece of ground for buying grounds containing 1728 square feet. Common Pleas Minute Bk D:436, 13 Aug 1862: John Gilstrap, administrator, to make partial distribution on 14 Aug 1862 - names heirs and amounts distributed to each. More info extracted from my files: Rebecca's father is the nephew of Ellender Gilstrap. William apparently married his cousin Nancy (dau of Ellender Gilstrap and Hardy Johnson. Wiliam and Nancy had the same grandparents but different parents. Clear anything up or just confuse you more ??? |
