Abel was a son of John Gilliland (1725-1798) and Elizabeth Young Gilliland of Tennessee. He was born abt. 1782 in Washington Co., TN. He came to Alabama about 1821, settling on Wolf Creek, near what is today Pell City, AL. He established a Methodist church, Gilliland's Chapel, which remained in use until the 1880s. Abel died about 1827. His life in Alabama is documented in the book, The History of Methodism in Alabama.
My informaiton is based on several genealogies: A Huson Family Genealogy; Barfield, Regan, Scroggins of TX, GA; and Ancestors of William Garner Fuller, Jr. The only line I have seen developed is that of Juliette Gilliland, a daughter of Abel and Mary Haynie.
I believe his widow and children moved to Texas, possibly with one or more of Abel's brothers (he had 7 brothers), after his death. One brother, Robert Young, moved to Kentucky. One of Robert's sons was named Abel also. John Gilliland, a Revolutonary War veteran, was apparently a well-known citizen of East Tennessee. At least one genealogy lists John's father as an Alexander Gilliland (b abt 1700), but I cannot say how accurate that is.
