Looks like Stephen (according to the 1855 & 65 NYS Census) was born in Dutchess Co., NY. Given that his firstborn son is named Gardner, I suspect he is the son of Gardner Gillett, Jr. (b. 1755 - Amenia, NY) and grandson of Gardner Gillet Sr. (b. 1715 - Suffield, CT).
