Notes for MATTHEW GILLESPIE:
THE GILLESPIE LONG RIFLES

THE GILLESPIE LONG RIFLE TAMED THE FRONTIER AND HELPED TO WRITE THE AMERICAN HISTORY!

They were pioneer gunsmiths and they had a gun shop right here under Forge Mountain in the hills of Henderson County in North Carolina.

Their long rifles tamed the wilderness and talked independence down on King's Mountain.

Many a mountain man who gambled his life on his gun trigger swore by the Gillespie rifle.

For downright true-firing, the Gillespie rifle spoke right up to anybody or anything on the frontier and a man could be as certain of hitting where he aimed as he was of death and taxes.

The first Gillespies, father and six sons, came out of England about 1700. They settled in Lancaster County in Pennsylvania, where German, Swiss and French Huguenot gunsmiths had begun to do business.

They brought with them the tools of their trade and a heritage of Old World gunsmithing.

It wasn't too long before the fame of the Gillespie rifle spread far and wide and Lancaster County became synonymous with the Gillespie rifle.

Daniel Boon carried a Gillespie rifle in the crook of his arm when he headed out of Pennsylvania for North Carolina and the Promised Land where a man could have room to spit without hitting a neighbor.

Some of the Gillespies followed Daniel Boon down into the wilds of the Blue Ridge, a range of timbered peaks that were old when the Rockies were new. They came down the Boone Trail, down through what is now called Gillespie Gap and Spruce Pine.

One of them, Mathew by name, crossed the French Broad and followed the Estatoe Trail, an Indian trading path, along Mills River (located in Henderson County, North Carolina). A half-mile down the river he discovered Philip Sitton operating an iron works on the south side of Forge Mountain, a loaf-shaped peak that was rich in iron ore.

Mathew Gillespie figured he had reached the end of his long journey. This seemed a likely spot for setting up his gun shop. Sitton told Gillespie that there was a great need for a master gunsmith.

So Mathew Gillespie sat down his forge and anvil here on Shooting Branch and began to turn out long rifles that made his a name legend on the frontier.

It wasn't long until he married one of the iron maker's daughters, Elizabeth Sitton, who proceeded to bear him three sons in a row. And each of them…Wilson, Harvey and Philip…became a crackerjack gunsmiths under the patient but demanding tutelage of their father.

They shaped the guns kelps, hammered out by their Grandfather Sitton, into guns and rifles whose reputation for accuracy spread far and wide.

The Gillespie rifle, long of barrel, slender and graceful of stock with a good deal of crook, became a frontier legend.

No two rifles were identical and yet any man could spot a Gillespie rifle in a wink. Many of them were often ornamented with inlays of brass, German silver or even coin silver. Silver sights adorned some and at least one rifle was turned out with a sight fashioned from Carolina gold!

To the man who owned one, it was a prime, superfine rifle, one that was fitting for doing a trustworthy piece of shooting, be it Red Skin, Red Coat or grizzly bear.

Of course, a lot of extravagant claims were made about the Gillespie rifle, none of which the Gillespies ever originated and which they themselves were the first to deny.

All that the Gillespies ever claimed was that their "rifles wouldn't blow up and they would shoot where a man aimed".
And no man ever questioned their true firing. Well, at least not more than one and he didn't rightly question the rifle itself. He laid it all to a witch.

At any rate, that's the story that's been handed down about old Ned McFalls who lived on Cataloochee Creek. Old Ned was quite a hunter in his days and he swore there wasn't a rifle in all the land to equal a Gillespie rifle for true firing. His faith in his Gillespie rifle was a thing that was worth a man's life to question it.

But one day when old Ned was out hunting, he got a close-up, broadside shot at a big buck and he missed it.

Some say the old man figured the world was coming to an end and he didn't have much time to get ready for the shot. They say he stood there and looked at his rifle and the cold sweat popped out.

And then he got to studying his rifle and decided somebody had bewitched it.

Well, he took off down the mountain and made his way past his cabin and on down into the faraway cove where he sought out a granny woman who had a reputation for lifting "spells."

He struck a bargain with her and handed over his rifle. For the better part of the day he sat there while the old woman crooned and moaned and mumbled strange words.

Eventually, she handed him his rifle and told him she had lifted the curse.

Old Ned headed back for his cabin on Cataloochee Creek. When he got home he took his hunting knife and cut an "X" in a tree, stepped off thirty paces, primed his rifle and then took aim.

His finger brushed the trigger and the gun exploded. He walked over to the tree, not without a little doubt, and looked at his mark. Right there in the center of the "X" was a hole.

After, that, old Ned didn't miss his target too often and when he did, he'd go search out the old granny woman.
It never did cross his mind that his eyesight was getting a mite fuzzy with the years.

The Gillespies could have told the old man his trouble. For they always said their rifle, "put a ball where a man aimed".

The Gillespies kept right on making rifles here on Shooting Branch until the Civil War. Philip was the last of the gunsmiths. And he went off to war and didn't come back. He was carrying a true firing Gillespie long rifle of his own make when he left.

The iron works fell into disuse. The forge was abandoned. And a Gillespie rifle became a rare collector's piece.

There is nothing now to remind a visitor that once the famed Gillespie gunsmiths had a gun shop here on Shooting Branch.

The water trompe is gone. There is no trace of the anvil and hammer.

But now and then you will run across a Gillespie rifle. There are at least three still around. One is in the rifle collection at the Pioneer Museum in the Great Smokes above Cherokee. And Mrs. Sadie Patton of Hendersonville owns another.

On their long barrels are the initials "PG", two of the last rifles made by Phillip Gillespie, who was the last of a long line of Pioneer gunsmiths whose long rifles tamed the frontier and helped to write the American history!

She was born Bet. 1820 - 1824 in Virginia, and died July 01, 1878 in Haseville, Linn County, Missouri (Smith Cemetery).

Notes for *JOHNATHON G. GILLESPIE:
By 1876, John had moved his large family to Linn County, Missouri, settling in the area of Linneus, the County Seat, in a small community known as Haseville. Here they became friends with neighbors, William and Margaret (Doak) Terrell. In 1880, two of their sons, Fulton and George married two of the Terrell daughter, Isadora and Ellen. In the early 1880's, a migration of Gillespie and Terrell family members from Linn Co., moved southward to St. Clair Co., to a town called Osceola, Missouri. Following the death of his wife,Sarah (Beavers) Gillespie, on July 1, 1878, John was a very lonely man and depended upon his children and friends for purpose and guidance, so he moved to Osceola also to be near them. He reflected over the years he and his wife had shared in hardships and joys in their travels from home in Virginia, to Linn County in north central Missouri, rugged, hard land, difficult to farm and then settling in St. Clair County for the balance of his life. He remembered the 1860 United States Census when he had declared his world worth at $200.00. He had come a long way in his little over sixty years. He died in 1888 near Osceola, Missouri and was buried at the Dunkard Cemetery there.

Notes for *GEORGE HARVEY GILLESPIE:
George and Ellen moved from Missouri to Oklahoma in 1890. They homesteaded a claim in Payne County about 12 miles west of Stillwater. They lived in a tent and covered wagon while they built a one room house.

Time were hard and very little work so in the winter, George would go back to Missouri to get work so as to earn money so as to try to make a crop in spring. And to add to the misery, everyone lost most all of their cattle with Texas Fever.

On the 10th of September 1896 George and Ellen started back to Missouri with 2 covered wagon and 9 children. They were 13 day on the road. It was hot and dry and sometimes water was a problem. They pulled into Moundville, Missouri on September 24, 1896. It was Joseph's birthday. George had traded for an 8 room house, lot and livery stable and there they settled down to live again. The kids started school a few days later.

In 1901 George bought a small farm. Ellen maintained the farm with the help of their older sons, while George remained in town to operate the livery stable and butcher shop while his eldest daughter, Adah Mabel kept house for him. 1901 was the dries year they ever saw. It didn't rain from about April till in the winter. Then it snowed and everything froze up. People drove their cattle horses 3 to 4 miles to the creek to water but some of them hauled water as much a 5 to 6 miles.

When Ellen was due to have her last child, she planned to go to town to await the the birth but failed to get away in time and the baby was born at the farm with the older children in attendance. The children were old enough to be helpful around the farm and the girls helped Ellen Jane in the house and in her vegetable garden. The home was a gathering place for many of the families in the neighborhood, both relatives and friends.

In 1904, George closed up the livery stable and moved out to the farm. As fast as the boys got old enough they went on their own. When the children were grown Ellen and George sold the farm. In 1910 they moved to Bozeman, Montana to live near Ellen Jane's brother, James. Arthur, Claude, Roxie and Earl and their families were also settled in this Montana area.

In Montana, George had helped his 2 sons, Roxie and Arthur in a shoe repair shop they owned, but when Ellen Jane was in bad health, they returned to Moundville, to a small house on eighty acres which they managed by themselves. Ellen died on the 30th of January 1934.

Lonely in years, George married a lady named Elizabeth David, fondly called "Muggins" by all. She owned a small variety store in Nevada. Muggins was not happy on the farm and George was not happy in town. George eventually died on the 2nd of December 1940 and is buried in Moundville, alongside his wife of so many year, Ellen Jane.

Notes for MAUDIE FRANCES GILLESPIE:
When Maude Gillespie married Joseph Sisseck, her father, George Gillespie, gave as a wedding present a gray horse named "Dick" which became their driving horse. When they returned to Oklahoma, just 10 years after they were married, Dick was tied to the back of the wagon and trailed along with them. The horse was the same age as Maude at the time of the wedding and lived to a ripe old age of 34 years, dying in 1915. During the years Dick served them well. At one time Dick caught his hoof in a fence and it cut his leg badly and was bleeding profusely when Maude hailed a neighbor passing by. The neighbor did quick first aid, utilizing ashes from the two stoves in the house to make a putty which he plastered over the wound, stopping the bleeding. It was then wrapped in a gunnysack and the wound healed properly. At that time they also had a horse named "John" which was teamed with Dick to provide their transportation. John was a dark brown, totally blind horse but had complete confidence in Dick's guidance. George Gillespie had also been the donor of this horse.

"Claude and I met in Bozeman, Montana on Memorial Day at a friend's home. We had lunch and were going to Bozeman Hot Springs for the evening to swim and dance. Claude was alone so we asked if he would like to join us and he gladly accepted. He asked if he could take me home; I refused as I was with friends but he could go home with us if he cared to. Again...he gladly accepted. From that day on he kept calling and dating until the Fireman's Ball on Eve of Thanksgiving. We were dancing and he asked if he could, "have this dance for the rest of his life." I accepted and we became engaged. He stayed at my parents home for Thanksgiving Day and for dinner. Six months later we were married on April 25, 1927. And to this marriage we had 5 children: Walter, Wilma, Robert, Theodore, and Claudia.
