I am unable to verify my ancestry to Thomas Edward Mayes who married Susan or Susannah Rutledge possibly in Wilkes County reportedly in 1802. I can find no evidence of that union. However, the location may be in error. They are supposed to have died in Georgia, but I can find no record of that. Thomas supposedly died in 1815 and Susan in 1821 and left 5 young children, one of whom is my gg grandmother, Malinda Mayes. It is a long shot, but any information on orphanges existing in the above-listed counties at that time might lead to her.
