I recently purchased FTM2005, RootsMagic2, and Legacy5. In my opinion, to be blunt, I think FTM2005 is crap.
1. You can't publish to the web (only genealogy.com). The program seems a front for pushing subscriptions on ancestry.com -- the default is to search the web (meaning ancestry), and of course supposed hits will cost you to see. I'd rather have software that's independent, and not part of an overall marketing strategy.
2. Even the ancestry search isn't all that useful. I was hoping for say a census source, to be able to get all the citation info automatically entered, such as enumeration district etc.; all you get is like 1910 US Census. I was even hoping to get the census image -- but you'll have to download as a file and input manually. Bottom line, if you have an ancestry subscription, it's more useful to just use your browser to get info and enter by hand into FTM2005. So, their integration stuff is next to useless.
3. The pedigree chart is awful. The fonts are verrrrry tiny. Expect to put your nose up to the screen and suffer strained eyes. There are no options to increase the screen font sizes. In fact, there's few display options at all, such as what info to show.
4. I had errors with FTM2005 importing from Legacy and RootsMagic -- I experimented. I had no errors between Legacy and RootsMagic.
Legacy5 and RootsMagic2:
RootsMagic2 has a very nice and clean interface. I think it's much more user-friendly and intuitive than FTM2005. Download the trial version; you'll see. It's also received some rave reviews (do a google).
Legacy5's user interface seems less polished, clunkier, than RootsMagic2. But this is just stylistic -- like the buttons are a little large, that kind of thing. But, it seems as user-friendly and perhaps more functional. And, it has lots of options to change what's displayed. It's well rated, often number 1 or editors pick.
Since I can move data back and forth between Legacy5 and RootsMagic2 -- including image links -- I plan to keep using both for now. I have no idea which one I'll stick with. I really like both.
As for FTM2005... just another thirty bucks sucked up by the myfamily money vacuum. It's the most popular apparantly because it's the most marketed by this everywhere you turn genealogy company.
