G'day Jody. This problem is documented in Mike Hobart's pages. Basically it comes about because Generations is a Windows 98 programme and XP uses the 2000 colour palette. If you do a new chart it shows in black and white, but prints OK. If you save it, it will then open in colour but print in black and white. I think if you save a chart before, open it first, then make a new chart all works OK. Broderbund version 8.5.a with a downloaded patch corrects this problem.
