I've got some questions about your posting. Am I correct that you have not installed Generations on your XP machine? If so, that is why the system cannot open the file - it does not know what program is supposed to handle the .uds type file. It's a binary database file so it needs the Easytree program to open it.
I'm also puzzled by your statement that you "couldn't find any XP software for it." I've installed every release of Generations from v4.2 through v8.5a on XP without problems (paying attention to the need to upgrade v5.2 to v6 for large hard drives, of course; and that Easychart has a color palette problem on XP - there's a workaround).
Take a look at the Generations Tip on installing and using the software under XP. http://users.sisna.com/mhobart
