There's lots of help for Generations available here
including (the last item) a section on the disappearing data syndrome. It's a long read, but you basically need to think what you have installed on the computer immediately before the problem arose, and then uninstall it. I've had problems with a new cordless mouse which had its own software (just unistall the software and then plug the mouse in again to let Windows install it as a generic mouse). Also with a combined printer/scanner: uninstall the character recognition part of the software.
