It sounds as if the backup file has gotten corrupted. Sometimes file corruption will lead the program to think that there are a VERY large number of names to be indexed (say in the millions). That can lead to that error message. You might be able to get around this by trying to open the file without doing the index update - if I recall correctly, hold the control key down while opening the file.

From there, try saving another copy of the file to your hard drive, then open THAT copy. I've found this fixes it in quite a few cases - but not all.
