I don't know what the rules were in the 1800's but now they keep them 5 days and try to return to sender. If no return address is on it it goes to the dead letter area. I would imagine that something similar happened back then.
I too have heard of people getting mail years later but I think that was the exception rather than the rule.
Too bad because I too have seen ads for my ancestors for unclaimed mail.
