Thomas Philo Muse was born in Wilkes Co., GA in 1847. His family moved to Carrol County, GA before 1850 and he grew up there.
About 1867 he married Lou Hawkins, who I'm trying to track. In the 1860 and all subsequent censuses except one, she is recorded with the name Louisa N. But in the 1910 census she is recorded as Nancy L., leaving me to conclude that she was either Nancy Louisa Hawkins or Louisa Nancy Hawkins. In all censuses she is recorded as having been born in North Carolina. From some source I haven't documented, I have her date of birth as 17 Jul 1846, a date which is consistent with the 1870 and later censuses.
On a neighboring farm to the Muses in Carroll County was John Thomas Hawkins, born in North Carolina, whom it develops was a son of Littleberry Hawkins and Campasophia Seaborn. Littleberry was born in Buncombe County, NC 12 Oct 1805, the son of Benjamin Hawkins there. Littleberry had also moved to GA, but had settled in Paulding County.
Littleberry Hawkins had a brother, William Hawkins, born 1 Apr 1794 in Buncombe Co., NC, married to Dorothy Jarrett. William and his family moved to Cherokee County, GA, prior to 1850 and, between 1850 and 1860, moved to Floyd Co., GA, where he is found in the census. His daughter Lucinda married there later that year. However, I have not found William or his wife after 1860, although William is supposed to have died in GA in 1874.
William and Dorothy's youngest daughter has been recorded as Nancy L. in most of the genealogies of the people who are tracking this family. And, in 1850, she is called Nancy when she is living with her parents in Cherokee County. However, in 1860, when she is with her parents in Floyd County, she is called Louisa. In other words, she is another Nancy/Louisa.
All of these facts, as well as the fact that I have looked in the families of other Hawkinses in the area and have found no logical Louisa or Nancy, make her a likely candidate for the wife of Thomas Philo Muse.
There are two problems. The first is the lack of a smoking gun. The second is that there is a three year difference in the age of Louisa/Nancy the daugher and Louisa/Nancy the wife.
If anyone can offer me any concrete information to resolve this puzzle, I would be most appreciative.
