There were several different Tidwell lines in the Paulding County area in the 1800s. Based on census records, William J. Tidwell, 1838-64, seems to be the son of Simeon J. Tidwell, 1810-83, buried at Wesley Chapel Church north of Villa Rica, Carroll County, who married Matilda Mayo in Coweta County in 1833. They lived in Meriwether County on the 1850 census, moved to Paulding County by 1860 and to Carroll County by 1870. If you can find a copy of Ettie Tidwell McCall's "McCall-Tidwell and Allied Families" (1930), she states that Simeon J. was a son of Benjamin Tidwell, born 1782, of Coweta and Meriwether counties. I don't have access to that book so I can't give you any more data from it. The Georgia Department of Archives & History had a copy at one time. William J. Tidwell, 1838-1864, was apparently the father of Jacob Tidwell, born 1860, and William James Tidwell, 1865-1931, buried in the Douglasville City Cemetery. I don't claim to be a Tidwell expert, but maybe this will give you some place to start.
