This has caused alot of confusion as I research this family. The spelling has been changed a few times. Here's the story I got explaining how the Hawkins County, Tennessee (Surgoinsville and Hawkinsville) FORGEYS became the FORGETYS:
After being left out of his father's will, James Reynolds Forgey, Jr., in response, vowed there would NEVER be another "Forgey" in his bloodline again. (I suppose he was quite angry, to say the least!) He changed the spelling of his last name from Forgey to Fogarty, then, to Forgety.
His vow wasn't broken as all of James' descendants have been Forgetys.
