Hi Shelia 1853...well not much here in Hamilton County then. Jasper was named in 1840 and a post office was established, the town was incorporated again in 1857. Records were distroyed twice actually so not much remains of pre 1870's. The book Hamilton County, Its History, Its People is pretty bad but it is a start in getting the historical data down. I was on the committee to publish the book and teh publisher did us no favors. But the book is out and popular. Don't think there are any more copies available but you could contact the "MainStreet" Jasper office or the Chamber of Commerse and they might be able to help you. Local cemetery first burial goes back to 1864....with people born in late 1700's. I have some references. Ask it won't hurt! Maybe I have something around. I am a local historian as such. |
