John Tanner settled in Gadsden County in 1820. He owned land there. He was born about 1790; he married Elizabeth Pope (b. abt. 1792) a daughter of Samuel (II) Pope b. NC 1752 d SC 1818 and Margaret [Unknown] c. 1765 d.d Savannah GA 1819 in Savannah, GA I believe it was in 1816. A daughter died in infancy before the couple moved to FL; a son, John (II) Tanner was born 1823 and was a farmer and lawyer, m. Ann Yonge, and John II had ties to both Gadsden and Jackson Cos. He was Captain, Co. F, 11th FL Inf., CSA. A son, John III, died in a Yankee prison.
In the years preceding his move from Savannah to Gadsden Co., John I was in business in Savannah with his wife and her older brother, William Stuart Pope 1789-1837. William and wife, Harriet SCURLOCK 1802-1888, moved south about same time as John and Elizabeth, but they settled in Jackson County. William's descendants, or some of them at least, still live in Jackson Co. I am a second great-grandson of William.
John [I] Tanner died, under what circumstances I don't know, in 1826. I believe he was in the territorial legislature before he died. I hope to identify his parents, place of birth, any siblings, and cause of death.
