Ships of the Swedish American Line from Gothenburg, Sweden, to New York:
Did third class emigrants in 1926 come by the ships into New York harbor (pier 97 I think), step off there and go onboard a ferry to Ellis Island for registration and so on, and after that? Did they go back again by the same ferry to New York or New Jersey for continued travel (by train for example)?
Was this still the procedure as late as in 1926???
I guess the big ships could never stop at Ellis Island for letting the emigrants walk off ???
