I am not sure what the term means. What test did you take? It might mean that you mismatched him on 7 markers on a Y-STR test, which is pretty far apart, depending on how many markers you tested. However, you could still be in the same haplogroup.

If you are talking about taking about testing for haplogroup, FTDNA recommends GENO 2.0 over SNP testing. This is a comparison:

However, it is much cheaper to test at 23andMe.com and you get a lot more for only $99. You get well-resolved mt- and y-haplogroups, entry into the Relative Finder database, ethnicity and health screening.

There is a slight difference in nomenclature, mainly for the old R1b, since 23andMe uses the 2010 ISOGG tree.

You would need to compare the markers which test positive against the 2011 tree, which is pretty much like FTDNA's tree.
