Hello Flo These are the three documents that I wanted to send you:- 1. I was just about to send you what I thought would be helpful information but at the last moment I have noticed what seems to be a big puzzle. I downloaded several pages concerning the Dinwoodie family of Scotland fom a website and from this I have extracted the information which you will find between the two lines below. According to your posting, your 1910 Census shows John Dinwoodie to have have been 50 years of age. In practice, this can mean 1860±1 or in other words sometime between 1859 and 1861. Now if you look at the information below between the two lines you will see that this seems to fit "your" John Dinwoodie. Again this appears to be confirmed by the name of his spouse as Mary Steel Black born in 1863 (which also seems about right). However, the puzzle now starts, because it shows that they were married in Scotland on 11 October 1859 and all their ten children were born in Scotland. You will also see that the child born in 1889 is named Theodore Edgar Black after Mary Steel's father. ____________________________________ Dinwoodie, John (1859 - ) - male b. 11 Oct 1859 in Colvend,Kirkcudbright,Scotland father: Dinwoodie, John (1830 - 1910) mother: Harries, John Ann(1831 - 1906) spouse: Black, Mary Steel (1863 - ) - m. 15 Aug 1881 in Dalbeattie,Kirkcudbright,Scotland ----------child: Dinwoodie, Leticia Black (1882 - ) ----------child: Dinwoodie, John Ann (1883 - ) ----------child: Dinwoodie, John (1886 - ) ----------child: Dinwoodie, Theodore Edgar (1889 - ) ----------child: Dinwoodie, James Ernest (1891 - ) ----------child: Dinwoodie, David McGeorge Newall (*1894 - ) ----------child: Dinwoodie, Paul (1896 - ) ----------child: Dinwoodie, William Earl (1899 - ) ----------child: Dinwoodie, Alexander Briggs (1900 - ) ----------child: Dinwoodie, Mary Steel (1903 - ) ____________________________________________________ The questions are: a. Have I misunderstood something? b. Is the above information completely wrong because I understood you to say that the children were born in the USA? The children above were all born in Scotland. c. Have I selected the wrong family? Do you have any information as to the exact date and place of birth of "your" John Dinwoodie who came to the USA? If so, then I can recheck everything. The following are the entries for the two Families of Black and Dinwoodie in the British Census of 1881: 2. Theodore Black Family. British Census of 1881 Dwelling: 69 Union St Census Place: Urr, Kircudbright, Scotland Source: FHL Film 0224056 GRO Ref Volume 864 EnumDist 5 Page 21 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Janet BLACK W 56 F Twynholm, Kirkcudbright, Scotland John BLACK U 22 M Rerrick, Kirkcudbright, Scotland Theodore Edgar BLACK U 20 M Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland Mary Steel BLACK U 17 F Kirkmahoe, Dumfries, Scotland 3. I have again checked on the Census of 1881 and although the name is spelt 'Dunwoodie' I think that this may well be the man who married Mary Steel Black in the USA. I believe the names Dinwoodie/Dunwoodie were often misspelled or changed. This John and Mary Steel Black lived quite close to one another and it would have been easy for them to have met, especially as their fathers were both in the same industry. The 1881 entry reads: Dwelling: 74 Union St Census Place: Urr, Kircudbright, Scotland Source: FHL Film 0224056 GRO Ref Volume 864 numDist 5 Page 22 Marr Age Sex Birthplace John DUNWOODIE M 51 M Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfries, Scotland John Ann DUNWOODIE M 50 FCaerlaverock, Dumfries, Scotland John DUNWOODIE U 21 M Colvend, Kirkcudbright, Scotland Elisabeth DUNWOODIE U 27 F Colvend, Kirkcudbright, Scotland William DUNWOODIE 13 M Colvend, Kirkcudbright, Scotland William John DUNWOODIE 5 M Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbright, Scotland James DUNWOODIE 9 m M Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbright, Scotland Although the situation isconfusing to say the least, I do hope that this helps and I send you all good wishes for your research David |
