Dear Cheryl de Sellier,
The records you need very likely still exist in Germany, unless they were destroyed during the WWII. In any case, it's worth a try. You can check at a Mormon genealogical library to see if they have the town(s) in question. If not, you may have to deal with a German genealogist. I can give you the name of a reliable, English-speaking person I have used:
Alexander Fülling
Schröder & Fülling
Postfach 10 08 22
D-51608 Gummersbach
Germany

e-mail: Info@heredium.de

His services are not cheap; to do a good search you are talking about something like $200. Better to ask in advance if price is very important.

You might be able to find some more precise infor about your fist American ancestor from death certificates, wills, tombstones or any other documentation. This could pin-point your search in Germany. Of course, rather than spend money on a German researcher, you could just take a holiday in Germany and try to do the research yourself. This would be the most fun and you can usually count on finding sympathetic help at German church archives, and normally someone speaks enough English if you can't handle basic German.
Good luck,
Robert Illing
