Uses as a guide

Generation No. 1

       1. Jean1 Dumais was born about 1600 in Normandie, France. He married (1) Miotte Lecomte. She was born about 1600 in Normandie, France. He married (2) Barbe Mauger. She was born about 1600 in Normandie, France, and died 11 Jul 1699 in Normandie, France.

Notes for Jean Dumais:
The Demers of Québec were the Dumets in Normandie.

Child of Jean Dumais and Miotte Lecomte is:
2       i.       Etienne2 Dumais, born about 1620 in St. Jacques, Dieppe, Normandie, France; died 05 Jan 1697 in Hôtel Dieu de Québec City, QC. He married Francoise Morin 28 Jan 1648 in Québec City, QC; born about 1620 in St. Jean of Perrot, La Rochelle, France; died Bet. 25 Feb 1663 - 1666 in Sillery, Québec. Canada.

Children of Jean Dumais and Barbe Mauger are:
+       3       i.       Jean2 Dumais/Demers/Dumets, born about 1627 in St. Jacques de Dieppe, Rouen, Normandie, France; died 03 Jul 1708 in Québec City, QC.
+       4       ii.       Andre Demers/Dumais/Dumets, born 03 Feb 1628 in St. Jacques de Dieppe, Rouen, Normandie, France; died 17 Jul 1711 in Montréal, QC.

Generation No. 2

       3. Jean2 Dumais/Demers/Dumets (Jean1 Dumais) was born about 1627 in St. Jacques de Dieppe, Rouen, Normandie, France, and died 03 Jul 1708 in Québec City, QC. He married Jeanne Vedie 09 Nov 1654 in Notre Dame de Montréal, QC (ct 4 Oct, Closse), daughter of Michel Vedie and Catherine Dorbelle. She was born about 1637 in St-Germain du Valla Fleche, Angers, Anjou, France, and died 01 Dec 1708 in Québec City, QC.

Notes for Jean Dumais/Demers/Dumets:
Jean was born about 1627 in the parish of Saint-Jacques in Dieppe (archdiocese of Rouen), Normandie, the son of Jean Demers/Dumais and Barbe Mauger. He is the brother of André Demers/Dumais, who married "Filles à Marier", Marie Chefdeville. Jean came to Canada in 1644.
I could not find him, nor his wife in the 1666 Canadian census. They seemed to have moved around a great deal. He was 40 years old in the 1667 census and 50 in the 1681 census at Lauzon. The recording of wrong ages was very common back then. No one really cared.
Sadly, Jeanne and Jean lost three of their children. François was buried at Montréal 04 November 1687, Catherine drowned 05 July 1693 and was buried the next day at Québec City and Michel was buried 21 February 1701 at Saint-Nicolas.
Jean Demers/Dumais or Dumets died 03 July 1708 and was buried two days later in Québec City.

Notes for Jeanne Vedie:
"Filles à Marier", page 301, Jeanne Voidy was born about 1637 in Saint-Germain-du-Val (near La Flèche, diocese of Angers), Anjou, the daughter of Michel Voidy and Catherine Dorbelle. She arrived in Montréal aboard the Saint-Nicolas on 16 November 1653, as a single and a member of the Grande Recrue (the great recruitment). This was a group of about 100 men and 47 women and girls recruited in France in 1653 by Marguerite Bourgeoys and the Societe Notre Dame de Montréal to help populate, strengthen and defend the settlement at Montréal.
At age 17, on 09 November 1654, Jeanne married Jean Demers/Dumais or Dumets in Montréal. It is not known whether Jeanne could sign the marriage contract drawn up 04 October by notary Lambert Closse, but her husband definitely could not.
She was 30 years old in the 1667 census and 43 in the 1681 census.
Jeanne Voidy followed her husband to the grave five months later. She died 01 December 1708 and was buried two days later at Québec City.

       4. Andre2 Demers/Dumais/Dumets (Jean1 Dumais) was born 03 Feb 1628 in St. Jacques de Dieppe, Rouen, Normandie, France, and died 17 Jul 1711 in Montréal, QC. He married Marie Chefdeville 07 Jan 1654 in Notre Dame de Montréal, QC, daughter of Jean Chefdeville and Marguerite Gesseaume/Jesiovun. She was born 05 Jun 1631 in Villers sous St. Leu (St. Denis), Oise, France, and died 23 Nov 1708 in Montréal, QC.

Notes for Andre Demers/Dumais/Dumets:
André was baptized 03 February 1628 in the parish of Saint-Jacques in Dieppe (archdiocese of Rouen), the son of Jean Demers/Dumais and Barbe Mauger. His godparents were André Sovet and Marguerite Morin. André is the brother of Jean Demers/Dumais, who married "fille a marier" Jeanne Voidy. He came to Canada in 1644 and made his way to Montréal by 1647, becoming the farmer of René Gauthier, Sieur de Varennes.
This family is listed in the 1666, 1667 and 1681 Montréal censuses.
On 06 July 1688, André Demers/Dumais was named guardian of the minor children of Urbain Jetté and "Filles à Marier", Catherine Charles. Five marriages would come of this circumstance: Nicolas Demers/Dumais & Marie-Barbe Jetté (1679), Michel Demers/Dumais & Elisabeth Jetté (1685), André Demers/Dumais & Anne Jetté (1686), Robert Demers/Dumais & Madeleine Jetté (1694) and Martine Demers/Dumais & Paul Jetté (1697). However, all was not bliss between the two families, as might be inferred from these multiple marriages.
On 05 August 1686, Marie and André actually filed a formal opposition (with notary Hilaire Bourgine) to son André's marriage to Anne Jetté, threatening that if he went through with the marriage, they would disinherit him and revoke a donation they made to him to start a forge. The problem, it seems, was with Anne's mother Catherine Charles. Since the marriage of their son Nicolas to Marie-Barbe Jetté in 1679, Catherine Charles allegedly called them "the most atrocious things that one can say against the reputation of a family. . .calling each to them 'Old Devil,' 'Old Wolf,' 'Warlock,' 'Magician' and other injurious words." At the time, accusing another of witchcraft, including having power over wolves, was a serious allegation that, if borne out, could ruin one's reputation. Nevertheless, André, at 27 years old, was past the age of majority and chose to go ahead with the marriage, claiming that he had no knowledge of any slanders made by Catherine Charles, but that if she called them names they called her some as well and in any case the whole problem was not his business but theirs.
Andre Demers/Dumais or Dumets was buried 17 July 1711 at Neuville.

Notes for Marie Chefdeville:
"Filles à Marier", page 89, Marie Chefdeville was born about 1634 in Villers, Picardy, the daughter of Jean Chefdeville and Marguerite Jesiovum. She arrived in New France in 1650, and is noted in Montréal on 17 July 1651 as the godmother of a native girl named Marie at Montréal. Marie most likely came to the colony as a servant, since she did not get married for three years, the length of a standard contract.
On 07 January 1654, Marie married André Demers/Dumais or Dumets in Montréal. Both spouses signed the marriage contract drawn up 11 December 1653 by notary Lambert Closse.
Marie Chefdeville was buried 23 November 1708 in Montréal.

====================
My resources are limited because I live in Oregon. I hope that you use this information only as a guide. I welcome corrections and additions from anyone that has access to the original files.

Originally I paid a genealogy society to trace the direct lines for 6 of my 8 great grandparents. They used the books that were compiled by volunteers for each parish. Because so many individuals had the same name, I eventually found some errors in these books. Then I used Tanguay and found out that he may be about 75% right and Jette (that goes to 1730) is about 90% right. Then just as I thought that I was finished, I found PRDH (University of Montreal) and I believe that they may be 98% right and still make corrections to their records. They go up to 1799 for marriage contracts and 1850 for some deaths. Some people have the luxury of having the original records at their disposal. I do not have that and with 17,000 individuals in my data base, I can not afford to pay for copies of all the originals. At that point I confirmed every that I had with the records at PRDH. Whenever I say “about” for a birth date it means that PRDH did not find it or if it is in the 1800s, I did not look it up because of my lack of resources.

PRDH uses the most common spelling variation for the names. This makes it easier to trace the families. They do not always use the original name that appears on the contracts or birth records. That is ok with me, because many individuals before the 1900s could not sign their names and did not even care how others spelt it. As a result the same person’s name took on a variety of spellings. I also kept the “dit” (aka) names because eventually brothers from the same family, picked a different aka name.

As for the pioneers, I also used Peter Gagné’s English books on the single girls that arrived in New France between 1634 & 1662 and his book on the single girls that are referred to as the King’s Daughters that arrived between 1663 & 1673. These girls were recruited and paid by the King to go to New France (Québec) to get married and colonize the area.

Most of my information for the 1800-1900s comes from people on the web. The program that I use does not allow for baptismal dates, so if I don’t have a birth date, I use the baptismal date. The same goes for death vs. burial dates and actual wedding vs. contract dates. The newer programs have these features, but I will not be going through 17,000 records to make the changes.

It is like I said in the beginning; use this information as a guide only. I view genealogy as a hobby and not as pure science.

As for the stories, I got them all in French on the web and I translated them for my grandchildren. I had not read or spoken French in over 40 years, so it was difficult and may not be the best translation.
Enjoy, Janet
