Hello, my name is Mark D'Elia and I am from Niagara Falls, NY. I have a fairly distant connection to RI, that being Capt. John Duncan/Dunkin (some records list him as Thomas) who was killed in the Battle of Minisink on the Delaware in Orange Co., NY in July 1779. His name appears on a monument there as Capt. John Duncan. I am not sure whether he was born in Scituate, Providence, RI or Worcester, MA, but it was in the 1730s. He married Abigail Vaughan, born Sep. 4, 1739, daughter of David Vaughan and Dinah Baker in 1759 in Scituate and shortly after moved to Dutchess Co., NY, where they had 6 kids: Thomas, William, Freeborn, John (m: Jemima Thomas), David (m: Hannah Titus) (from whom I am descended), and another unknown. I notice that the name Freeborn tends to pop up several times in John and Abigail's descendants, so that may be an old family name. The surname Duncan suggests Scottish ancestry, but I am unable to move beyond Capt. John. I thought it might be fairly easy to find his ancestry because he was fairly well known. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks!
