I am looking for information on Charles Edward Carey. He was married to Alice “Allie” Hopkins. Both were born in Delaware.

I have Charles and Allie living in Philadelphia PA (Ward 32 Enumeration District 828 Sheet Number 11) during the 1900 census. They both were “borders” living with Van Kirk Family. Charles was a motorman and Allie was a dressmaker.

On the 1900 census, Charles birth date was listed as Feb 1863. Allie’s birth date was listed as May 1869. They had been married for 9 months. Since the census was recorded on June 13, 1900, that would put their marriage date September 1899.

Charles and Allie had 2 children Charles Edward Carey and Rhoda Carey. 1910 census showed Allie and kids still living in Philly. 1920 census showed Charles Edward Carey (son) age 19 and Rhoda Carey (daughter) age 17still living in Philadelphia. That census also showed that Allie was widowed and that the son’s name was reversed to read Edward Charles Carey.

By the 1930 Census, Allie, Charles Edward and Rhoda all moved back to Delaware.

1930 census showed the son (Charles Edward Carey) back in Delaware married to my grandmother Anna Smith Carey with at the time 2 children Ann and June. Rhoda went on to marry Norman Workman in 1941 and had a son Lawrence.

In the 1880 census, I found Charles Edward Carey, then age 17, living in Delaware. He was listed as a “servant” for the Johnson family (farmers). Census for the 1880 (June 5th) was Broadkiln Hundred for Sussex County (supervisor district16, enumeration district 46 page #8). His age, being 17 would still coordinate with his birth date of 1863.

The only census for the 1870 that I was able to find for a Charles Carey was a boy, listed as being “10 years old”. He was listed as a “farm hand” for the John Green (age 26) and his wife Leah (age 23) with daughter Sarah (age 2). That census for the 1870 census was July 9th from Broadkiln Hundred for Sussex County page #33. I could not find any Charles Carey who would have been 7 years old at the time of the 1870 census.

So, I’m looking for any information regarding my Charles Carey who was born in 1863. My mother thought that he was also known as “Charlie” but wasn’t sure if it was something he was called when he was younger or not.

Charles died around 1902 in Philly, basically around the birth of his daughter Rhoda. I am trying to find information on this Charles “Charlie” Carey. If anyone has information I’d appreciate your response
