Hi Dorothy,
The wait is over. I think we have found your man. The present caretaker of Oddfellows is 81 year old Charlie Gordy. During my weeklong stay near Laurel, it was the last couple of hours that we happened upon Charlie "flagging" the gravesite. He had his blueprints, tape measure and trusty collie with him. Charlie wrote, "the only John W. Gordy on our books says he died 1912. John W. Gordy 11/12/12. Lizzie Gordy 1985? 1/24/85, Lee Gordy 7/19/89. He was buried in lot 12, section 1. bought lot in 1902."
John does not have a marker. To the left of John, is Lizzie. Her stone is of the old marble type of that time period. The stone is listing forward at about thirty degrees. Lizzie A., wife of John W. Gordy is quite readable. The rest of the wording is obscured with weathering stains. A gentle scrubbing would probably make the stone readable. To the right of John, is the stone of Lee.It, too, is an older marble stone well weathered. Lot 12 is to the right of south road and right at the front of the cemetery. Mr. Gordy takes a lot of pride in the upkeep of the cemetery. He has received many compliments over the years for how it is maintained. I took photos of the site if you would want them mailed.
