Hello. My name is Ioannis and my mother's family comes from Leonarisso. They left the village about 1976, two years after the Turkish Invasion.
My mother has heard this name when she was very young. She told me that his nickname was "Amerikanos" meaning American. She also told me that Giakoumis had no children in Cyprus and died before 1974.
Leonarisso is located 43km northeast of the city of Amochostos (Famagusta). It was a village of only Greek Cypriot population of around 1000.The main church was that of Saint Dimitrios. There were also churches of Archangel, Saint Antonis and Saint John (inside a cave). After 1974 invasion by the Turks, Saint Dimitrios church has been transformed to a mosque.
In 1975 38 Greeks continued to live here under very difficult conditions. Today 3-5 persons continue to be enclaved there. The occupation forces and the illegal occupation authority prohibit the return of the rest of the Greek population of the community.
If you want more information about Giakoumis I will ask my other relatives.
