This name LOIZOU appears thought out Cyprus and is less common in Greece which tends to suggest the name originated from Cyprus.
The name I believe started from the French Knight Guy de Lusignan who acquired control of Cyprus in 1191 and descendants of the Lusignans that continued to rule the Kingdom of Cyprus until 1474.
During the long Lusignan period almost three centuries, the Cypriots would have called the Lusignans various forms of the word Loizou. Loizos (male), or Loizou or Loizidou (female) and Loizides for a group.
