Sherman P. Andrus was born about 1836 in Connecticut, probably in Litchfield County. He first appears in 1850 Census where he is 14 and living in New Hartford with Hobart and Sarah (Ryder) Atwood. Hobart and Sarah Atwood were originally from Watertown. In 1860 Sherman is living in Plymouth in household of Elvira Goodwin. Elvira's son Ralph Goodwin is a lock manufacturer and Sherman is a "lock smith." In 1870 Sherman is working in a lock shop in Plymouth. He is married to Mary (b. 1846) and has two children: Ida (b. 1866) and Burton (b. 1870).

In 1880 Sherman remains in Plymouth but has a new wife named Elizabeth and a step daughter Elsie M. Gibson (b.1872). Elizabeth Ann French was born 4 Jan 1842 in Watertown and was previously married to Jerome Gibson. City directories indicate Sherman was an employee of the Eagle Lock Company in Terryville in 1884 through 1889. His widow, Elizabeth was in Terryville in 1890 and 1891.

Burton L. Andrus became a locksmith like his father. In 1900 he worked in Washington, DC as a locksmith. In 1910 he was a "tool and die maker" and superintendent of U.S. Mail locks. In 1920 he was a special agent for the Post Office and in 1930 an inspector of Post Office Department. Burton's wife was Alice (b. 1876 PA) and he had a son Robert G. Andrus (b.1908 D.C.) Burton died 15 Dec 1970 in a nursing home in Neshanie Station, NJ. His son Robert died in Jul 1985 in Lemant, DuPage, IL.

Does anyone know the parents of Sherman P. Andrus?
