Have done some research for Colonial Dames on early Thomas Canfield, am copying this info cause its so similar to what you asked about Samuel..this is from History of New Milford & Bridgewater by Orcutt...Thomas Canfield arrived in Milford by 1646 as he was allotted a home lot #55 consisting of 3 acres. He later purchased other land, and received 4 acres from the town for supporting a gate at Newfield. he was a Sgt in the trained band and represented the town in the General Court in Oct 1674 & 1676...
In looking at some of the genealogies
1. Samuel had a son, Thomas b. 14 Oct 1654 ancestor of the Sybrook and Derby familes...too early for you
2. Jeremiah son of Thomas -had a son Thomas born 16 Sept 1704
This is not complete but maybe will be of some help...
